The purpose of this book is to disseminate the research results and best practice from researchers and practitioners interested in and working on modeling methods and methodologies. Though the need for such studies is well recognized, there is a paucity of such research in the literature. What specifically distinguishes this book is that it looks at various research domains and areas such as enterprise, process, goal, object-orientation, data, requirements, ontology, and component modeling, to provide an overview of existing approaches and best practices in these conceptually closely-related fields. *Note: This book is part of a series entitled ?Advanced Topics in Database Research".

He is a professor in information systems at IDI, NTNU, (Trondheim, Norway). He is also a senior advisor at SINTEF. He was employed as a manager in Accenture (1991-2000). John Krogstie is the Norwegian Representative for IFIP TC8 and Vice-Chair of IFIP WG 8.1 on information systems design and evaluation, where he is the initiator and leader of the task group for Mobile Information Systems. He has published around 80 refereed papers in journals, books, and archival proceedings since 1991.

Terry Halpin, (BSc, DipEd, BA, MLitStud, PhD) is a distinguished professor at Neumont University. His industry experience includes several years in data modeling technology at Asymetrix Corporation, InfoModelers Inc., Visio Corporation, and Microsoft Corporation. His doctoral thesis formalized object-role modeling (ORM/NIAM), and his current research focuses on conceptual modeling and conceptual query technology. He has authored over 150 technical publications and six books, including Information Modeling and Relational Databases and has co-edited four books on information systems modeling research. He is a member of IFIP WG 8.1 (Information Systems), an editor or reviewer for several academic journals, a regular columnist for the Business Rules Journal, and a recipient of the DAMA International Achievement Award for Education (2002) and the IFIP Outstanding Service Award (2006).
