About this ebook

Nothing ever happens in Norway. But at least Ellie knows what to expect when she visits her grandmother: a tranquil fishing village and long, slow summer days. And maybe she'll finally get out from under the shadow of her way-too-perfect big brother, Graham, while she's there.

What Ellie doesn't anticipate is Graham's infuriating best friend, Tuck, tagging along for the trip. Nor did she imagine boys going missing amid rumors of impossible kidnappings. Least of all does she expect that something powerful and ancient will awaken in her and that strange whispers will urge Ellie to claim her place among mythological warriors. Instead of peace and quiet, suddenly there's a lot for a girl from L.A. to handle on a summer sojourn in Norway! And when Graham vanishes, it's up to Ellie—and the ever-sarcastic, if undeniably alluring, Tuck—to uncover the truth about all the disappearances and thwart the nefarious plan behind them.

Deadly legends, hidden identities, and tentative romance swirl together in one girl's unexpectedly epic coming-of-age.

3.5 stars I found VALKYRIE RISING to be a well-written and compelling read, with a world Paulson has vividly brought to life. The folklore and mythology are fresh and interesting, not the tired re-hash that is so many other books of the paranormal/fantasy genre these days. The characters are a dynamic cast and, on the most part, interesting (thank God). I did, though, read a review previously that warned of this book's slow pacing, and I have to say, I do agree with them. The characters spend a lot of time thinking/planning, instead of making/doing. The fast parts, though, do pretty much explode off the page. But the intervals between each action scene weren't nearly as enjoyable as they could've been. Overall, though, I am very much looking forward to a sequel to VALKYRIE RISING, and I would gladly recommend it to anyone looking for adventure, girl kick-assery and bad-assery, and just general fun.

Ingrid's grandmother might actually be a Valkyrie; Ingrid is still waiting for her to come clean.
