Marlies Folkens wurde in Stollhamm-Ahndeich, einem kleinen Dorf direkt an der Nordseeküste, geboren. Nach dem Abitur zog sie zum Studium der Geschichte und Politik nach Oldenburg, wo sie bis heute lebt. Sie ist verheiratet, hat zwei Töchter im Teenager- und drei Kater im Flegelalter.
