For two decades Professor Hermann Bengtson's EmfÞbrung in die alte Geschichte (Munich 1949; ed. 6, Munich 1969) has been the standard introduction for German university students of ancient history. No comparable manual has been available in English.
This translation is made especially for students who have not yet acquired facility in German. It departs from Professor Bengtson's text mainly in that the general bibliographical appendix has been reorganized to conform with the plan of the Cambridge Ancient History and also has been revised with the English-reading student in mind. Further, the system of abbreviations has been changed throughout to follow the usage of the Oxford Classical Dictionary and L'annÃĐe philologique. The most common abbreviations used in ancient studies, as well as those used in this book, have been listed in the appendix.
