În luna mai 1830 orașul Derbend din Caucaz suferă de o imensă secetă și foametea amenință să izbucnească. O legendă spune că, pentru ca ploaia să revină, este necesar ca un tânăr, al cărui trup și suflet sunt pure, să urce pe vârful muntelui Chack-Dague și să aducă un vas cu zăpadă. Ar fi fost suficient apoi ca zăpada să fie aruncată în apele mării Caspice, iar ploaia va veni imediat.
