Es uno de los grandes novelistas rusos de todos los tiempos. Se instaló muy joven en París donde pronto fue conocido por las figuras sobresalientes de la vida cultural francesa. Frente a los eslavófilos (Dostoievski, por ejemplo) fue el campeón del europeísmo ruso y en sus novelas defiende siempre la modernización del campo ruso. En cierto sentido, perteneció a la corriente naturalista y fue su introductor en la literatura eslava.
