First published in 1832 in the second book of Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka. “Ivan Fedorovich Shponka and His Aunt” is a realistic work, already in many ways close to Gogol’s mature works, and therefore stands out significantly from the other stories of “Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka.” This history allows us to believe that it could have been written later than the entire cycle of Ukrainian stories.
