Having faced numerous disasters in its history, Japan has learned from them and adopted various preventive measures. Through such experience, Japan has taken the initiative in putting disaster risk reduction (DRR) on the global agenda since the 1990s, hosting three UN World Conferences on the theme. As a result, DRR, promoting measures to reduce human and economic loss due to disasters, and enhance resilience, is now recognized as an indispensable undertaking worldwide. This is particularly relevant for countries where population growth, rapid urbanization and disorderly development are increasing the underlying risks. This feature explores Japan’s history of enhancing disaster resilience and JICA’s cooperation efforts for DRR.
