Best first of series ever. Once a year I "revisit" this book to reacquaint myself with the beginnings of this series. Almost a palate cleanser. Some books in series are more interesting, some are almost too dark to enjoy. No book is dull or without insight into this woman, the life she leads or the man she chose to love

I read this when it was released as a newly published book over 2 decades ago. I had forgotten the issues this book covers & unlike when it was published those issues are front & center today. War, gun rights, sex trade, police, family division, & touches on a few others. I've read a wide selection of Nora Roberts books & I prefer her voice as J. D. Robb. I own this entire series & consider it some of the most blunt writing to be found on the market. Purple prose will not be found in this series. She sets the scene fairly well, puts the main characters in place, & then keeps a reader moving at a brisk pace throughout the book. Since this series is ongoing the character arcs are not complete. Even though these books are written to stand alone they make a powerful impact if read in order. I enjoy the series. If you prefer a light touch of romance you'll enjoy this book.

I enjoyed meeting Eve Dallas, a first class "cop" and lieutenant with the NYSPD. She keeps you turning the pages, never wanted it to end, and yet can't wait for the end. Her frustrating but steamy beginning with Roarke, the love of her life, turns very personal and tender as she allows herself to trust him. Their relationship leaves you wanting more...in a very good way.
