Le 14 juillet 1953, comme chaque année, les Algériens, encadrés par le service d'ordre du MTLD et arborant un portrait de Messali Hadj, participent au défilé du PCF et de la CGT à Paris en l'honneur de la Révolution Française. Au moment de la dislocation, la police parisienne ouvre le feu, tuant sept personnes (6 Algériens et 1 Français) et faisant une centaine de blessés par balle. L'auteur replace ce drame, prélude au 1er novembre 1954, dans l'histoire longue de l'immigration algérienne.
