Această carte este o culegere de povestiri şi de aforisme provenite din opera prodigioasă a lui Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Rūmī, numită Masnavi sau Mathnawi (după numele unei forme poetice compuse din distihuri), cuprinzând aproximativ 25 000 de versuri, împărţite în şase cărţi.
Textele lui Rūmī sunt ca o lumină în noapte! Dar vor rămâne obscure pentru cei care nu ştiu să citească în ei înşişi! Căci nu întâmplător morala acestor povestiri nu este prin nimic definitivă şi etică în sine, ca în alte fabule cunoscute, ci, prin „morala” lor contradictorie, îi lasă fiecăruia grija de a face alegerea interioară pe care nimeni n-o poate înfăptui pentru noi.
