New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Jana DeLeon brings you the first book in the Ghost-in-Law series.

Family can be the death of you...

Scientist Maryse Robicheaux thought that a lot of her problems had gone away with her mother-in-law's death. The woman was rude, pushy, manipulative and used her considerable wealth to run herd over the entire town of Mudbug, Louisiana.

Unfortunately, death doesn't slow down Helena one bit.

DEA Agent Luc LeJeune is wondering what his undercover assignment investigating the sexy scientist has gotten him into - especially as it seems someone wants her dead. Keeping his secrets while protecting Maryse proves to be easier than fighting his attraction for the brainy beauty.

Trouble in Mudbug is a humorous mystery and contemporary romance set in the bayous of southern Louisiana. It is the first book in the New York Times bestselling Ghost-in-Law series. Trouble in Mudbug has a cozy mystery feel and features a strong heroine turned amateur sleuth, a sexy hero, and a ghost unlike any you’ve ever heard of. It appeals to fans of light paranormal, paranormal romance, cozy mysteries and also to fans of the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich.

I listened to the audiobook version of this and it was a very funny book, read perfectly by Johanna Parker, about botanist Maryse who works on the Bayou in Louisiana and the fact that she can just see her recently deceased Mother-in-Law, Helena, who has come back as a ghost! It's not like they even got on either, and most people thought Helena was rude and bossy anyway so Maryse isn't amused! Maryse is then left a parcel of land on the Bayou in Helena's will, which she didn't expect, as she had been trying to divorce Hank, Helena's loser of a son, for a while now, but he'd gone missing as he was in trouble with the law. But it seems Helena didn't really trust the rest of her family (cheating husband/lying son) to protect the land, but did trust Maryse. It turns out Helena didn't die of natural causes after all and was murdered, so is determined to find her killer, with Maryse's help. But then of course Maryse gets caught up in the mess too and it seems someone is trying to kill her too! Throw in a very attractive DEA agent, Luc, who is investigating Maryse even though she has no idea that's what he's up to (to start with anyway) and is posing as a zoologist sharing space in her office, and you end up with a very amusing book with mystery, murder and romance. I haven't read any Jana DeLeon books before, even though she's been on my TBR pile for a while, but after this one I will definitely be checking the rest of this series out. Very entertaining!

Apart from mystery and humour combination, I liked it most for its humanity touch. I will remember long the conversation between Maryse and Helena, in which she told about life lesson she had learnt but after death. If love making scene would not in novel then it would make much larger reader's age range.

About the author

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Jana DeLeon was raised in southwest Louisiana among the bayous and gators. Her hometown is Carlyss, but you probably won't find it on a map. Her family owned a camp located on a bayou just off the Gulf of Mexico that you could only get there by boat. The most important feature was the rope hammock hanging in the shade on a huge deck that stretched out over the water where Jana spent many hours reading books.

Jana and her brother spent thousands of hours combing the bayous in a flat-bottom aluminum boat, studying the natural habitat of many birds, nutria and alligators. She would like you to know that no animals were injured during these "studies," but they kept makers of peroxide in business.

Jana has never stumbled across a mystery or a ghost like her heroines, but she's still hopeful.

She now resides in Dallas, Texas, with the most spoiled Sheltie in the world.
