Le succès de Jean-Paul Sartre, à l'origine de l'existentialisme, prit à partir de 1945 des proportions étonnantes et le philosophe devint, avec Simone de Beauvoir, le centre d'une constellation d'artistes de talent. Du point de vue philosophique, il vaudrait mieux parler d'"existentialismes français" au pluriel et distinguer une tendance chrétienne, où se situeraient Gabriel Marcel, Emmanuel Mounier, Jean Wahl, et une tendance athée, représentée par Jean-Paul Sartre et Maurice Merleau-Ponty.
