About this ebook

When long-buried betrayal is uncovered, can the magic of the season heal old wounds?

A story of friendship, love, and second chances in the second half of life

After her divorce, Kathleen moved closer to her daughter and grandchildren, hoping to get to know them better and find a new place to belong.

Not ready to retire, Kathleen bought the local toy store only to find that, after sinking a large amount of her savings into it, the business was losing money. She must turn a profit by year’s end, and she can if she has a good holiday sales season. If not, well…it doesn’t bear thinking about.

Just as the season begins, Kathleen’s daughter and son-in-law are called away on an emergency and ask Kathleen to mind the children for a few weeks. Kathleen jumps at the chance to spend quality time with the girls and though it will take some juggling to care for both the children and the store, she’ll handle it.

What she can’t handle is Roy, the twin’s paternal grandfather. The conniving schemer is trying to steal their granddaughters’ love and leave her out in the cold.

Again.

Roy, a widow of two years, has agreed to care for his granddaughters while his son and daughter-in-law are away. What he finds disagreeable taking Kathleen’s help. The woman is meddlesome, managing, competitive, and a general pain.

But he promised his son, and he always keeps his promises.

Can the magic of the season heal the strife between this pair and help them find peace, forgiveness, and maybe even love?

This was a quick read that I finished in about a day. I found the story really interesting. The characters had obvious chemistry even though they had a falling out in their past. What happened in the past was brought up numerous times, but its resolution never really happened. We spent a lot of time hearing about everything that happened and why it was causing an issue so much later in their lives, but it was never dealt with. The book's whole resolution went very fast, and it was like all the issues were miraculously forgotten. The relationship moved quickly as well, I just don't think that was realistic given what these characters would have to work through to get to that point. But, again, it was all magically okay and those issues ceased to exist. Was the ending one that I hoped would happen? Yes. However, it wasn't very believable and so it didn't feel right. I received an ARC of this book for free, and I voluntarily left this review.

About the author

Jeanine Lauren is a USA Today bestselling author who writes stories about friendship, love and second chances in the second half of life, because let's face it, the second half is the most interesting.

Though Jeanine has been writing most of her life, many (okay, almost all) of her words have been for her day jobs, term papers, volunteer work, or used to make endless 'to do' lists she rarely looks at.

In 2019, Jeanine finally published the first book in her Sunshine Bay series -Love's Fresh Start - followed by three more so far, and is now writing as fast as she can, trying to make up for lost time.

Jeanine lives in the lower mainland of British Columbia, Canada not far from the fictional town of Sunshine Bay where most of her characters live.
