Hugo von Hofmannsthal (1. 2. 1874 Wien – 15. 7. 1929 Rodaun bei Wien) lebte und arbeitete nach einem Jura- und anschließenden Romanistik-Studium mit Promotion als freier Schriftsteller in Rodaun bei Wien. Der Fin-de-Siècle-Generation angehörend, wandte sich Hofmannsthal vom Ästhetizismus kommend einer skeptischen Reflexion der Realitätserfahrung zu und verarbeitete intensiv kulturelle Traditionen. Für Richard Strauss schrieb er Opernlibretti, mit ihm und Max Reinhardt gründete er der Salzburger Festspiele, für die er den "Jedermann" schrieb.
