Millicent Newberry is the busiest private detective in town, even though she makes her clients sign an unusual clause before taking a case: Miss Newberry — not the law — is the final arbiter of the fate of any wrongdoers she may uncover. The case of Marion Mason's stolen emeralds takes her to the Mason home in the guise of a live-in seamstress, where she discovers a domestic situation in need of more than simple crime detection.
