Fifteen-year-old, Mary Beth Johnson, has lived her life lonely and as an outcast. She has learned to survive the post-apocalyptic Colorado terrain by learning three important lessons: trust your instincts, blend in when possible, and don't get caught.

After nearly seven years of living in a settlement ran by the government, blending in was pretty simple. But things never come easy for her. One day, she is faced with letting her family slowly starve to death or face the wilderness of Colorado almost a decade after the bombs went off. Her mutation from the radiation of the bombs has marked her as different from the others in her settlement and gives the most recent decision from the government has pushed her to finally leave to give her family enough food to survive. With her brother’s disappearance seven years before, getting away isn’t going to be fun. After enlisting the help of her younger brother, MB is ready to go. Getting out into the wastelands of Colorado wasn’t easy but she made it, but now she has to survive the harsh lands and opaque skies that surround her. While traveling, a gunshot rings out and MB witnesses a man falling. Rushing to the man’s aid after the vehicle disappears, MB is in for a shock. Nursing the man back to health, she learns his identity and fights to find out why he left his family, but she doesn’t know if she can accept it if he is ever willing to disclose it.

Meanwhile, the lullaby that has helped her maintain her calm during the harsh years of adolescence in the settlement urges her to go higher, to seek higher grounds. After the man heals, he joins her on her journey. A journey that he took once upon a time. Fighting off bandits and the radioactive wildlife MB knows that something is up. And it’s her job to figure it out. So, she climbs, she travels, to the highest peak that she can only to discover that the secret that she was trying to figure out was inside of her all along.
