About this ebook

A woman is caught in a gripping moral dilemma that resonates far beyond her place in time and history in #1 New York Times bestseller Jodi Picoult's latest novel.

A young woman and her husband, admitted to hospital to have a baby, request that their nurse be reassigned--they are white supremacists and don't want Ruth, who is black, to touch their baby. The hospital complies, but the baby later goes into cardiac distress when Ruth is on duty. She hesitates before rushing in to perform CPR. When her indecision ends in tragedy, Ruth finds herself on trial, represented by a white public defender who warns against bringing race into the courtroom. As the two come to develop a truer understanding of each other's lives, they begin to doubt the beliefs they each hold most dear.

as much as I have read & so enjoyed many of her other books... this is my favourite to date. The situation is feasible across religious & culture boundaries .... even in our "enlightened" society.

The balance of characters was superbly crafted, the research is exceptional. Not only do we learn the terminology of birthing babies but also the language of a court of law. We learn that racism is about the degrees of difference in skin colour and is as intrinsic to our society as the smell of a bad fart. People are promoted demoted sent to jail brought up on charges true or not. If a person has darker skin they are overlooked for promotions, have their own groups, style their hair at salons with staff that are dark skin and understand how their hair works. Is there ever a white working at those salons? Do they not teach it at hairdressing school? No. That is racism.
