John Clanchy was born in Melbourne but has lived in Canberra since 1975. He is best known for his short stories, which have won major awards in Europe, the US and New Zealand, as well as Australia. His novels include Lie of the Land (Pascoe), Homecoming (UQP), Breaking Glass (UQP) and If God Sleeps (Penguin) a crime thriller written in collaboration with Mark Henshaw (as J.M. Calder). His most recent novel Lessons from the Heart is the sequel to the highly acclaimed The Hard Word, which won the ACT Book of the Year Award in 2003.
