J.R. was born in Knox City, Texas, and spent his youth in Carlsbad, New Mexico. He graduated from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas, and spent seven years as Personel Officer of the Nevada Employment Security Department, after which he attended South Texas College of Law in Houston, Texas. After passing the bar exam, J.R. moved to Center, Texas, where he has maintained a private practice for over 36 years, except for four years when he was elected and served as Shelby County Criminal District Attorney. His primary area of law is in criminal law. He resides with his wife, Cindy, four Pomeranians, and a large Macaw.
