Se unió a la escuela naturalista que dirigía Zola y en esa línea escribió sus primeras novelas. Más tarde, inició una corriente que denominó “naturalismo espiritualista”, que luego se conoció como decadentismo. Esta nueva tendencia lo llevó al catolicismo y a su ingreso en un monasterio desde donde siguió escribiendo novelas de gran éxito.
