Dafnis y Cloe, dos niños (varón y hembra, respectivamente) encontrados por pastores, se crían juntos y nace entre ellos un mutuo amor que ninguno sospecha. Los rivales perturban la paz de Dafnis, pero ambos amantes son reconocidos por sus padres, y regresan a una feliz vida de casados al campo.
