Kids Flute Learning is a Carnatic music beginners’ book to initiate little ones to music with notations in bigger font for little eyes.

This book contains foundation lessons a student should start in Māyāmāḷavagauḷa and Malahari ragas as prescribed by the Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board up to Varnams. Focused mainly on bālaks and bālikās who wants to start on Carnatic flute, this book is equally useful for violin, vocal practices etc.

While teaching Carnatic flute to my daughter Jahnavi, I was preparing computer scripts with bigger fonts so that her four-year little eyes can read easily. Later I thought why the same can’t be made a complete PDF so that it may be useful for others too. This is how it all started which now has many revisions and became part of Sangeet Bhārati initiative.

This book is intended for bālaks and bālikās learning the Carnatic flute. So, it contains foundation lessons a student should start in Māyāmāḷavagauḷa and Malahari rāgas as prescribed by the Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board (KSEEB). This book is equally useful for Violin, Vocal and other practices too.

The initial version of this book had few bhakti geets and bhajans towards its end. It was to bring interest in music by encouraging children to sing them with tāḷa during pooja at home. As we started compiling another work “Shlokas and Bhajans” exclusively for bhakti geets, they are now replaced with Carnatic abhyasagana compositions as per KSEEB junior syllabus (up to Varnams).

In my childhood, a small Kannada book on good manners and right living called ನನ್ನ ಏಳ್ಗೆಗೆ ನಾನೆ ಶಿಲ್ಪಿ (Man the maker of his own destiny) from Ramakrishna Mission influenced me a lot. I am providing some of what I learned from this book at the end of the (otherwise blank) pages. Hope this helps music students to build foundations of their strong personality.
