Marie Vachenauer deckt auf, dass sich Der Proceß, wohl eines der bekanntesten Romanfragmente Kafkas, vermutlich auf einen historisch verbürgten Kriminalfall bezieht. Minutiös analysiert sie die Parallelen zwischen dem Text und den historisch belegten Fakten.
Die Autorin folgt den Wegen Josef K.s und zeigt, dass viele der im Roman beschriebenen Orte noch heute im Prager Stadtbild wiederzuerkennen sind. Gleichzeitig geht sie einer weiteren Spur nach: Ist Der Proceß eine Abrechnung mit jahrhundertealtem Unrecht und Antisemitismus?
