कबीर के जन्म और उनके पालन-पोषण के संबंध में कई किंवदंतियाँ प्रचलित हैं। कहा जाता है कि उनका जन्म बनारस में एक विधवा ब्राह्मणी के गर्भ से हुआ था; जिसने लोक-लज्जा के भय से उन्हें लहरतारा नामक तालाब के किनारे छोड़ दिया था। नीरू और नीमा नाम का एक मुसलमान जुलाहा दंपती उधर से गुजर रहा था। उसी समय उन्हें किसी नवजात शिशु के रोने की आवाज सुनाई पड़ी। आवाज सुनकर वे आश्चर्य में पड़़ गए; ‘यह क्या? ये तो किसी बच्चे की आवाज है!’ वे आवाज की दिशा में ही बढ़ते हुए इधर-उधर देखने लगे। तभी उनकी नजर तालाब के किनारे पड़े एक नवजात शिशु पर पड़ी। दोनों उसके पास पहुँच गए। वहाँ एक सुंदर-स्वस्थ बालक को पाकर वे प्रसन्नता से उछल पड़े।
