I never heard of this author before I picked up his book "Tribulations". I picked it up after only reading the back to get the gist of the story, not reading a few pages in to get a taste of the writing style as is my normal fashion. I wish I had taken the time. This book is simplistic at best. There is no descriptive narration, no ability to set a scene and very rudimentary grasp of writing ability. In other science fiction and fantasy books I have enjoyed over the years descriptive narration is key. David Eddings, Patrick Lee, J.K. Rowling, J.R.R. Tolkien, Harry Harrison as well as many others are able to set a scene and pull the reader along in a proper fashion. Getting a sense of the surroundings and settings of a scene or even basic storytelling ability seems to have eluded Mr. Shufeldt. I don't know how many other novels he has written, but I doubt I will be reading any of them. I couldn't even finish this one. I felt that I was reading a story written by a grade school student. I can only hope that Mr. Shufeldt takes a few creative writing classes as his writing definetely could use the help.
