The taxonomic key includes native perennial grass species found in Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, and eastern parts of North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas. To differentiate between native grass species and some exotic species having similar morphological characteristics, several of the more common exotic species are included in the key and illustrations, with an notation of "exotic" in parentheses.
