You know I always thought that Alaska would be this beautiful but very cold place and well I couldn’t be more excited to tell you that is may very well be cold but while I was visiting Mystery, Alaska, it was so very, very hot. In fact, I would go so far as to say, I thought my clothes were just gonna melt right off. There was this group of sexy and super hunky warrior shifters that caught my attention and well I just couldn’t seem to keep my eyes in my head. And when a dragon shifter named Col met his soulmate, Naomi, things really started cookin’. Col and Namoi are strong, captivating characters that had some seriously sizzling chemistry that I could practically feel from every page as they worked through their differences and the emotional turmoil that goes hand in hand with differing cultures and then there was the fact that Col has some baggage from back home interfering with wooing of Naomi which lead to him fighting some seriously messed up dragons that were determined to destroy Col which of course added some thrilling danger and excitement to the story and kept me glued to the pages of this fast paced and excellent beginning to this new series. Once again, Krystal Shannan has created an exciting, sexy and fascinating new world full of vibrant wonderful characters that she brings to magical life with her well written words. I was very excited to hear about this new Soulmate Shifters Series and I couldn’t wait to read the first book and I have to say that I was in no way disappointed, so I can’t wait until I get to visit Mystery, Alaska again and get to know more of these sexy warriors.

KNOCK DOWN DRAGON OUT leans a bit more towards the world of fantasy romance than standard paranormal romance than we are used to from Krystal Shannan, while it does feature shifters, and the author establishes her world as the story progresses. The concept of soulmate is a crucial element of shifter romances, and while I know how it works, I thought the bonding was far too quick: Col – the dragon shifter – and Naomi Parker – a human wildlife photographer – are head over heels in love almost instantaneously. I thought their obsession to mate became tiresome: they constantly want/need sex giving way to lengthy and numerous sex scenes, which I felt it contributed to the unevenness of the book. For example, we are catapulted in the thick of the action right at the beginning, then lust/sex/love happens then and there. KNOCK DOWN DRAGON OUT is book 1 in the new Soulmate Shifters in Mystery, Alaska series, and it unmistakably feels like it, but Ms. Shannan does a solid job in introducing the characters and her world, without bogging down the story, and introducing characters, which will certainly be featured in upcoming books. Col landed in Alaska from Reyla through a portal, as did other shifters – notably members of the Lion Tribe, who sound positively scrumptious. But in KNOCK DOWN DRAGON OUT, something doesn’t quite work, and I can’t exactly put my finger on it; maybe it was something to do with how it’s structured, I don’t know. As expected, the writing is young, and modern, and the action sequences are nothing short of spectacular: Krystal Shannan knows how to create an impression of movement like few authors can. I was also quite surprised at how often I chuckled; Naomi is quite the character: she doesn’t understand why she feels the way she does towards Col, but it feels so good, she just goes with the flow, and it’s fine. Her inner monologues and lines of dialogues are often hilarious, as is Col’s bewilderment at trying to get used to life on Earth, familiarise himself with everyday conveniences, such as technology and even clothes and houses; all those are foreign concepts to him which leave him baffled and the reader amused.

In general the writing came across as just... inexperienced... with the dialog and flow feeling unnatural or even corny. It might be good for those who are just getting into paranormal/shifter romance books but having experienced a lot of shifter series, dragon being my favorite, this book definitely didn't make my list... I couldn't even bring myself to finish it.
