Laut Atteslander (2003) sind sowohl quantitative als auch qualitative Methoden geregelte und nachvollziehbare Anwendungen von Erfassungsinstrumenten (z.B. Befragung, Beobachtung oder Inhaltsanalyse). Bei der Empirie ist das Erfassen gesellschaftlicher Daten intersubjektiv nachvollziehbar und ihre Deutung durch Dritte kontrollierbar, d.h. die soziale Wirklichkeit wird nach bestimmten Regeln abgebildet bzw. abstrahiert. Das Messinstrument soll sowohl verlässlich („Reliabilität“) sein als auch Gültigkeit („Validität“) besitzen. Soziale Daten sind systematisch erhobene Aspekte gesellschaftlicher Wirklichkeit und werden als abstrahierte Wirklichkeit dargestellt. In der empirischen Sozialforschung sind soziale Tatbestände jene Ausschnitte sozialer Wirklichkeit, die im Blickfeld theoretischer Annahme festzuhalten sind (d.h. empirisch tatsächlich feststellbare Erscheinungen).
