  Puroshottam Shreepat Kale (VaPu Kale’s father), has written this book somewhere in the 1940-50s. He was an artist by nature. He would colour the drapes required during dramas, look after the upstage, offstage and costumes. He worked with Keshavrao Bhosale’s Lalitkaladarsha Drama Company. Though an artist, he had equal command over words and writing. PuShree, as he was fondly known as, has also portrayed an apt word-picture of many artists. He had an immense store of stories and memories of these eminent personalities. His innovative style has made the content readable and interesting. It also allows us to take a round through the past of drama and theater.ललितकलेच्या सहवात’ हे पुस्तक पुरुषोत्तम श्रीपत काळे (‘वपुं’चे वडील) यांनी विसाव्या दशकाच्या पूर्वार्धात (४०-५० दशकात) लिहिले आहे. ते स्वत: चित्रकार होते. केशवराव भोसले यांच्या ‘ललितकलादर्श’ नाटक मंडळीत ते पडदे रंगविणे, नैपथ्यरचना अशी कामे करीत. चित्रकार असूनही शब्दांवर आणि एवूâणच लेखनकलेवर त्यांची हुकमत होती, हे पानोपानी जाणवते. सुमारे ऐंशी वर्षांहून अगोदरच्या काळात मराठी भाषेवर संस्कृतचा प्रभाव होता. शब्दोच्चार आणि लेखनही अनुनासिक होते. अशा काळात लिहिलेले असूनही त्यांची शब्दरचना लालित्यपूर्ण आहेच, शिवाय आशयघन आणि वास्तवदर्शी आहे. हा ‘ललितकलादर्श’चा छोटेखानी इतिहासच म्हणता येईल.
