About this ebook

L.E. Modesitt, Jr.'s The Magic of Recluce begins his bestselling fantasy series the Saga of Recluce, which is one of the most popular in contemporary epic fantasy.

Young Lerris yearns to find a place in the world better suited to his skills and temperament. In Recluce this means taking one of two options: permanent exile from Recluce or the dangergeld, a complex, rule-laden wanderjahr in the lands beyond. Many do not survive.

Lerris chooses dangergeld.

Lerris will need magic in the lands beyond, where the power of the Chaos Wizards reigns unchecked, and he must learn to use his powers in an orderly way before his wanderjahr, or fall prey to Chaos.

This entire series is predicated on "chaos magic" being evil and "order magic" being good, even when chaos magic is used towards good ends and order magic used for bad. I personally find this pretty unconvincing and not at all compelling as the main driver of the plot. Usually, no matter how bad a book series, I will see it through to the end, but the Magic of Recluce series was just so illogical and boring that I couldn't bring myself to continue after the second book.

I enjoyed the concepts that were introduced. The author's view on order and chaos was refreshing because, I believe, it is contrary to popular opinion. The only area I did not enjoy was the author's writing style. Other than that it was a solid read.

Why google, did you recommend this? It's almost painfully simplistic and old fashioned in its writing. That said, it was oddly difficult to let go.
