Édouard Schuré, uno dei più brillanti portavoce di un momento cruciale della religiosità e dell'idealismo occidentali, ci presenta un ritratto di un Gesù inedito e per molti versi sorprendente rispetto a quello che ci è stato fatto conoscere dai vangeli canonici.
Cristo infatti secondo Schuré avrebbe fatto parte della misteriosa setta degli Esseni, un gruppo ebraico nato attorno alla metà del II secolo a.C. e organizzato in comunità isolate di tipo monastico e cenobitico, di cui soltanto.
Quando Schuré scrisse quest'opera però si sapeva ancora pochissimo degli Esseni, dato che i misteriosi rotoli del Mar Morto, ritrovati a Qumran soltanto nel 1947, non erano ancora stati scoperti.
