There's a veil of mystery that hangs over this carnival. Rina was a witch who had graduated from Grimalkin Academy. At the time she was in a relationship with Caleb, a vampire, but she broke it off right before graduation. An aging witch and a vampire with eternity at his fingertips just didn't make sense, especially when there would be no chance of children in their future. Now, forty-some years later, her life is in the circus. How she got there, she has no idea. She only knows it happened shortly after she left the academy and she was turned into a vampire. Now her magic is gone, either stolen or lost because of the change. To make matter worse, if that's possible, each member of the circus MUST wear an amulet around his or her neck and report to the owner of the circus known only as Master. If I say there is an unspoken creepiness that can be felt through the storyline. This was a fast-paced tale that brings in Rina, the three lion-shifters from her act, her best friend and knife thrower Caoimhe, and Caleb. We also see a glimpse of Sally, Master's witch, and assistant. The characters are fully developed so when I say to you, I can't wait to read 'Knives of Justice', it's with the full intention of jumping on it on release day.

First I just want to mention, this us a stand ak w book, the start of a new series. However, some of the characters attended Grimalkin Academy so have history. It is given enough of an explanation to fully understand but having read the previous books could hell tou better connect with the characters. There are several series that are staged at Grimalkin Academy and I'm not sure which one Katarina and Caleb can be found in, maybe a couple of them? Anyway, I liked this short story that seems to set the tone, world and gets you acquainted with the characters. You learn the basics about the Carnival, a good bit about Rina and Caoimhe and get to know Caleb (if you haven't met him previously). Looking forward to the next book!

This is a prequel and will leave you guessing and wondering what is going on. It's done well because as the reader we want more and now I can't wait for the series to begin. There is mystery along with some romance but mostly I was on edge wondering how these characters arrived at the carnival and what the "Master's plan is.
