In the year 60 or 62 of our age, Emperor Nero sent an expedition into the heart of Africa, following the course of the river Nile. Very few records remain from such an adventure, which is surprising in itself, as they went further than any European expeditions would in 2000 years time. Seneca records it in his Natural Questions and testifies to them arriving to what they considered to be the sources of the Nile. Pliny the Elder assures they sent an embassy to the Kingdom of Meroe and that in the expedition there were praetorians, which was very strange. From these few pieces of information, León Arsenal conjures up a story about the expedition, with a degree of control over spaces and time as accurate as difficult to achieve. He also builds a tableau of characters of the period, among which the two expedition leaders gain special prominence: Tito the prefect and Emiliano, the praetorian tribune. Both also close a triangle with the Nubian priestess Senseneb, sent by her kings to escort the expedition. With these historical, geographical and human elements, Arsenal has built a classical adventure novel, which has been awarded best Spanish language historical novel in competition such as the Ciudad de Zaragoza or Espartaco awards.
