Im Jahre 1899 wird „Der Stechlin“ – Fontanes letzter vollendeter Roman – herausgegeben, drei Jahre nach Buchveröffentlichung der Poggenpuhls. Deshalb werden diese häufig als Vorläufer des Stechlins bezeichnet, weil Fontane auch dort an Handlung gespart hat. Im Folgenden sollen in knapper Weise Inhalt und Form der Poggenpuhls dargestellt und einige stilistische Merkmale wie Symbole behandelt werden. Zusätzlich wird ein Blick auf mögliche Konflikte geworfen und entsprechend Vorschläge für Lösungen gemacht werden.
