About this ebook

Rainshadow Road is the second book in Lisa Kleypas's popular Friday Harbor series.

Lucy Marinn is a glass artist living in mystical, beautiful, Friday Harbor, Washington. She is stunned and blindsided by the most bitter kind of betrayal: her fiancé Kevin has left her. His new lover is Lucy's own sister. Lucy's bitterness over being dumped is multiplied by the fact that she has constantly made the wrong choices in her romantic life. Facing the severe disapproval of Lucy's parents, Kevin asks his friend Sam Nolan, a local vineyard owner on San Juan Island, to "romance" Lucy and hopefully loosen her up and get her over her anger. Complications ensue when Sam and Lucy begin to fall in love, Kevin has second thoughts, and Lucy discovers that the new relationship in her life began under false pretenses.

Questions about love, loyalty, old patterns, mistakes, and new beginnings are explored as Lucy learns that some things in life—even after being broken—can be made into something new and beautiful.

As soon as I received this book, I sat down to read and was astonished to find I had finished it in less than 24 hours! I am usually not a big fan of contemporary romances, but I am rethinking my position. The story moves at a nice clip, unfolding over a believable time span. The characters endear themselves to you almost from the start. I was astonished at how quickly Lucy pulled me in! She was very down to earth and definitely someone who felt real- with all her emotions, dreams, and borderline cynicism. She is a glass artist that believes all is well in her universe until her loser boyfriend Kevin dumps her for her younger sister. To make matters worse, he tries setting her up with a an old high school classmate-not a friend of his by any means. Her handling of the situation was real and touching, I felt tears fall at the pain of the situation and her now shattered ego. Enter Sam who is the classmate of Kevin, but is upfront on the ruse and his "expectations" of any relationship he enters- no strings, no mess, no fuss. I was delighted to find that Sam was a character that I could easily envision running into at a coffee shop or market. The progression these two characters go through dealing with a growing attraction while trying to remain "emotionally unattached" was at times heartbreaking and also funny. Sam and Lucy struck me as two very real, honest, and vulnerable people that come into the relationship with baggage that might break lesser characters. It is their need to move forward from the trauma and mistakes of the past that places the reader firmly into the story and leaves you cheering for these two wounded souls
