Die Witwe Margarete von Seden ist nun seit einem Jahr allein. Um Gut Seden steht es schlecht. Als ihr der ebenfalls verwitwete Silvan Graf von Hohenau den Hof macht, reagiert sie zunächst abweisend. Hier nagt sie am Hungertuch und hat nichts als Sorgen und Schulden, und wenn ihr der Graf Silvan ein solches Angebot macht, dann wäre es unverzeihlich, nicht zuzugreifen. Wenn er auch keine Schönheit ist, sie wäre doch für den Rest ihres Lebens versorgt. Aber dann stellt Graf Silvan eine folgenschwere Bedingung: "Entweder geht Ihr Sohn Fried aus dem Haus, oder aus der Heirat wird nichts!"
