I found the book took awhile before the actual story came through--at a lengthy five-hundred pages, this is explainable. The story revolves around wealthy families who throw dinner parties and go otter-hunting. For the first few hundred pages, we hear nothing but cousin Simon. Then we hear of how tensions start to build up between certain family, especially against Constance. We see the relationship grown between Simon and Hester. Lucy Bethia Walford follows in the steps of her contemporaries, such as Edith Wharton and E. M. Forester. "Cousins" has been cited as one of the better works of Walford--I was drawn to it after reading about it on one of the (Oxford) dictionary websites. It is a shame that Walford is a forgotten writer.
