Die Tür flog auf und ein Fremder stürzte herein. Die Köpfe der Dörfler ruckten herum. Der Mann sah panisch über seine Schulter und warf die Tür wieder zu, legte den schweren hölzernen Riegel vor. "Hey Mann, was soll'n das?", fragte Chenloo, ein grobschlächtiger Bauer, der Fremde nicht mochte. Der Mann beachtete ihn nicht, sondern wich von der Tür zurück und rang nach Atem.
Chenloo stand auf und legte ihm schwer eine Hand auf die Schulter. Der Fremde fuhr herum. Schreckgeweitete Augen starrten Chenloo unter der Kapuze des Reisemantels hervor an. Der Mann stammelte: "Um euer Dorf schleicht ein schrecklicher Fish'manta'kan! Ich habe ihn gesehen! Er ... er hat ein kleines Mädchen gefressen!"
