About this ebook

She wanted purpose. She got dark magick and war.

Claire Emerson is adrift. After a lifetime as a wife, mother, and grandma, she never saw divorce or loneliness coming and is desperate for some sense of purpose. But when her sixtieth birthday brings a snarky gargoyle, an annoyingly sexy wolf shifter, and an unknown magical calling, she thinks she's losing the only thing she has left: her sanity.

Refusing to believe she's the powerful defender of humankind her so-called protectors claim, Claire attempts a return to her safe life... only to have her powers ignite when she's attacked by dark supernatural creatures. And without the training she was supposed to have received, she has no idea how she'll defeat sinister mages plotting her demise.

Can Claire overcome creaky joints and major hot flashes in time to save the world - and her own life?

This is a fun story. More development could have been devoted to character personalities and interactions. I saw the Chrone interacting with her two guardians, but not enough interaction with her own son before the big magic reveal. The story felt rushed in different areas. It would have benefited greatly if the she took more time and care writing the action scenes. But I got the distinct impression that the author was trying to write these important scenes quickly, or she was misinformed that she needed to leave much of it on the cutting room floor by her editor. Whatever the reason, it is a disservice to what was on its way to being a grand and epic novel. I do hope that book two corrects these problems. It will definitely boost my star rating if that is the case. L. Hawke: What caught my eye about your book was that your main character just turned 60 y/o. Bravo for that! Just the woman's age alone gave me enough of a reason to buy this book & read it. I will be recommending this series to other women if it goes well because aging women need characters who reflect us.

one of the best books I've read in a long time!! A fresh take on an old plot. Suddenly, discovering you have Magick at the age of 60 has a way of reordering your life. Whether you're ready or not. Wonderfully written

Claire lives an ordinary life...until her 60th birthday. Then unusual things start to happen, beginning with the crows... I really enjoyed this story. I love the fact that the heroine is of "a certain age" and finds that, instead of winding down, things are beginning to happen for her. This transformation isn't seamless, or easy, but I enjoyed watching Claire as she found her voice and her courage. She learns to cope and to use the tools available to her - I particularly enjoyed her ingenuity during the battle with the gnomes. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series and seeing where Claire's adventures take her.
