Né dans l'État de New-York, Lyman Frank Baum (1856-1919) est éleveur de volailles, puis comédien, courtier en pétrole, rédacteur et journaliste, avant de publier en 1897 son premier livre. En 1900 paraît Le Magicien d'Oz qui connaît un très grand succès. Lyman Frank Baum a publié une centaine de livres.
