Charles Bovary, a mediocre and dull man, has his life planned out for him by his mother. She marries him to a widow, who dies shortly after marriage. He then falls in love with Emma, who has fantasies about what married life should be. Charles falls short of those fantasies. Gustave Flaubert (December 12, 1821 – May 8, 1880) was a French writer who is counted among the greatest Western novelists. He is known especially for his first published novel, Madame Bovary and for his scrupulous devotion to his art and style.
