این اثر مدعی عرضه‌ی نگاهی بسیار دقیق و همه جانبه و جامع به جامعه‌ی ایرانِ تحت جمهوری اسلامی نیست اما تلاش یک جامعه شناس را در حدود چهار دهه پی گیری هر روزه‌ی تحولات و رخدادهای جامعه‌ی ایران و مشاهدات چند دهه زندگی در ایران منعکس می‌سازد، بالاخص آن که نویسنده در دو دهه‌ی اول در متن تحولات حضور داشته و از نزدیک آنها را حس و لمس کرده و در دو دهه‌ی بعدی نیز تلاش کرده از منظری بیرونی و با فاصله‌ی بیشتر آن را دنبال کند. این اثر نوعی جامعه شناسی ایران بعد از انقلاب است
