Esta monografía se concibe fundamentalmente como una herramienta; por ello se trata de una obra que posee carácter instrumental, no conceptual, y pretende facilitar a los lectores herramientas matemáticas y modelos que se emplean en diversos campos (por ejemplo, coordenadas curvilíneas no ortogonales, concepto de tensor, fluido newtoniano) pero cuya dispersión en programas y bibliografía dificultan una visión de conjunto. Teniendo en cuenta que la termodinámica de noequilibrio es una herramienta básica para el estudio de los sistemas continuos, se presenta tanto el modelo clásico basado en la hipótesis del equilibrio local como la Termodinámica Extendida (EIT).
