Having achieved its independence from France in 1960, Chad has run into a serious crises of national building, which have continued to haunt it to the present day, making it one of the poorest and most politically unstable countries on the globe. About the author

Mario J. Azevedo is Professor and Chair of the Department of History and Dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Jackson State University, Jackson, Mississippi. He is the author of several books on Africa on issues of history and public health.

Samuel Decalo was Professor of Political Science at the University of Natal, Durban, South Africa. Prior to teaching at the University of Natal, Durban he taught at the University of Rhode Island, Kingston, and at the University of Botswana, Gaborone.
