Chari La'Mone

Most people realize their passion early on in life, other such as myself needed it pointed out to them. The first ten years of my life were spent as an only child. Leaving me most of the time with only my pen, pad and imagination. I would spend hours writing everything from poetry to dreams even doodling images relative to whatever I was feeling. The world was one big story filled with all kinds of main and sub characters with their own storylines in it. I lived in two completely different worlds which gave me versatility not only in life but in my writing. I grew up splitting my childhood between life with my Grandmother in the projects of Greenburgh, NY and my mother in the suburbs of Tarrytown or Sleepy Hollow as it’s called today. With them, it was teachings on right and wrong from my mother or proper edict and appearance from my grandmother. I felt like an outcast in both of these worlds neither of them suited me or my creativity. My dad was the only one at the time who seemed to get me being an artist, he was peculiar himself. At one point, I thought I was supposed to follow in his path with drawing and painting, but I grew bored with it and eventually lost interest.

When I was thirteen my mom packed my brother and I up moving us to south Florida. I hated it there at first. Then about a year after being there I crossed paths with a local rapper. As I began hanging out with him I became curious as to whether or not I could lay some hardcore poetry over a hot beat. One night in the studio I ran into the sound booth and jumped behind the mic, notebook in hand. I began pouring out my words and caught everyone’s attention. I recorded four songs playing them for friends and my mom. At first she wasn’t happy with the content of my sexually explicit, and gangster rap lyrics, but she gave me her blessing realizing I had a way with words. But, just like with painting I lost interest in it before I could perform my first show.

It wasn’t until 2009 when I came into my calling. I was google searching one of my favorite African American, female, erotic authors when I stumbled onto her website. After a couple of month of being a member I noticed there was a place for members to submit short stories for others to read and rate. I read through several of them and decided to try my hand at an erotic short story. After penning it and reading it over for about three hours, I closed my eyes and clicked submit. I quickly logged off terrified of the responses I may receive. The next day during my lunch at work I logged back on to see the results, and to my surprise people loved it and were asking for more. Unsure if I could create another one I sat back, closed my eyes clearing my mind, and wrote what was playing in my mind’s eye. This time I stayed online and waited for the response once again I didn’t disappoint. I began posting short stories on a daily basis rapidly becoming a member favorite. One evening after posting another story I received an inbox alert. I opened it and almost hit the floor. The author of the site gave me a rave review on my talent and advised maybe I should peruse wearing the cap of an authoress. Talk about an ego boost.

With the advice of this times best-selling author, I sat down to create my first novel. It seemed easy enough I pounded out my story and in six months my novel was nearly complete. I was so excited I began announcing it to the world. Unfortunately, not everyone in my life was excited for me. Late one night I sat down to finish up my creation, I opened up my word program and searched for the title – GONE! I couldn’t believe it all those months of hard work and time erased with a simple stroke of a key. Riding the waves of devastation I had to retract all announcements and immediately sat down to recreate what was lost. Not only was I unsuccessful but every attempt I made to recreate my novel came up missing. I figured maybe it wasn’t meant to be and to keep peace in my household I gave up on my dream- HUGE MISTAKE.

After going back and forth with myself for two years and removing all toxins from my life I once again sat down to pen a novel. This time there wasn’t anyone to destroy my work or kill my creativity. I worked diligently on it setting aside time every night to write or go over my work. Once again another stumbling block was placed in my path. I was robbed and my laptop with all my work was gone. This time I was smart, I had begun emailing my work to myself. The only concern now was who ever had my laptop could steal my story and call it their own. Frustrated, I was ready to give up again. But, it was my mother who was the voice of reason. She sat me down and told me God blessed me with the gift of storytelling and I need to pursue it no matter what. Hearing those words gave birth to the fire I needed to go full force with my dream. Once again I began writing working off my iPhone so I would always have it with me. Just like all the times before this something came in between my writing and I. I was working on my novel when one of my brothers called me to inform me of tragedy. My baby brother was in an accident and was being rushed to the hospital in critical care. I wish I could tell you my brother survived but at fifteen years old he was called home. For two years I didn’t even look at my novel all I could write about was the pain I was feeling.

2014 was the turning point for me. I received a call from an author friend of mine asking me to contribute to a series with her and another author friend of hers. At first I wasn’t too sure, I mean I hadn’t written anything for a while. I agreed to do it and production quickly began, it felt amazing and suddenly I felt all was right in my world again. I cannot describe the feeling of finally seeing my name on the cover of a book.  Unfortunately the project was short lived but the writing continued on for me. I was determined to stay the course.

Today, I have co-authored the first of a novella series entitled The Chronicles of Sin: An Erotic Tale and I am diligently working on my novel, looking forward to its completion. While things still happen and there are bumps in the road, I hold fast to my mother’s words to never give up no matter what.
