किसी भी दर्शक के बैठने या खड़े होने की कोई जगह खाली न थी। जामुनी और सफेद रोएँवाले वस्त्रों में सजा कानराड प्रधानमंत्री की कुरसी पर बैठा था। उसके दोनों ओर राज्य के प्रधान न्यायाधीश बैठे थे। बूढ़े ड्यूक ने सख्त हिदायत दी थी कि उनकी बेटी का मुकदमा बिना किसी रियायत के सुना जाए। उसके बाद दिल टूट जाने की वजह से उन्होंने बिस्तर पकड़ लिया था। अब वह चंद दिनों के ही मेहमान थे। बेचारे कानराड ने बहुत मिन्नतें कीं कि उसे अपनी ही बहन के अपराध का मामला सुनने से मुक्त किया जाए; लेकिन उसकी बात नहीं मानी गई। उसे यह देखकर बहुत दुःख पहुँचा कि लोगों को पहले उसमें जो दिलचस्पी थी; वह कितनी तेजी से खत्म हो गई थी। लेकिन उसे काम तो चाहिए था। लिहाजा अपमान का घूँट पीकर काम की तलाश में भटकता रहा। आखिरकार उसे ईंटें ढोने का काम मिल गया तो उसने अपने भाग्य को धन्यवाद दिया। अब न कोई उसका परिचित था; न उसकी परवाह करता था। वह जिन नैतिक संगठनों को चंदा दिया करता था; अब वहाँ अपना सहयोग निभाने लायक नहीं रहा था। अतः उसका नाम उन सूचियों में से भी हटा दिया गया और उसे यह पीड़ा भी सहन करनी पड़ी। -इसी संग्रह से प्रसिद्ध कथाकार मार्क ट्वेन की रोचक-पठनीय-लोकप्रिय कहानियों का संकलन।
