Ratings and reviews

This is a VERY easy young adult read. The main character is like-able and easy to sympathize with (in this book at least) - MUCH more so than that milksop Bella. I felt that it wrapped up much too quickly. It left way too many plot points up in the air and while I realize this is a series and not everything can (or should) be completed at the end of book one, there was no real closure to ANY of the plot. It would be as if JKR ended book one of Harry Potter after the first quidditch match where Harry catches the snitch with his mouth. It just felt incomplete, as if the first book is nothing more than a reason to buy the second books.

There were some interesting concepts introduced, but overall I couldn't really sympathize with the heroine. The introduction of a gay character felt forced, and the whole novel preached abstinence and prudishness in a way that made it painfully obvious that the writer was a out-of-touch parent. I wasn't terribly impressed with the "teen talk," which was mostly cursing. The whole thing reeks of "I want to be the next JK Rowling." Mix Harry Potter and Twilight, and you get a school for vampires!
