About this ebook

It is a chilly and foggy Twelfth Night, wild with North Sea wind, when a bizarre murder disturbs the outward piece of Rackmoor, a tiny Yorkshire fishing village with a past that proves a tangled maze of unrequited loves, unrevenged wrongs, and even undiscovered murders.

Inspector Jury finds no easy answers in his investigation—not even the identity of the victim, a beautiful young woman. Was she Gemma Temple, an impostor, or was she really Dillys March, Colonel Titus Crael’s long-lost ward, returning after eight years to the Colonel’s country seat and to a share of his fortune? And who was her murderer?

Another good story, but not quite as compelling as The Man with a Load of Mischief. While I surmised who the guilty party was early on, it kept me guessing as to sideline stories and how it would be wrapped up. Melrose Plant was once again stupendous. Jury gave off hints of the tragic and more melancholy figure I remember him from later books. The supporting cast came off as living rather wretched lives; not gritty like in noir novels, but rather moving from one piteous life event to another. Bertie Makepiece was the notable exception. Not that he didn't have a hard life, but that he simply was going to make the best of his situation enduring privation without it being calamitous to his being or outlook on life. The eBook was formatted well with only one noticeable spelling/grammar mistake.
