Der dritte Band der Lateinisch-Deutschen Studienausgabe Martin Luthers bietet insgesamt acht Texte zum Thema 'Die Kirche und ihre Ämter'. Im Zentrum stehen die beiden aufeinander bezogenen, aber selten im Zusammenhang edierten Schriften: 'De captivitate Babylonica ecclesiae, praeludium' (1520) und 'Ad librum. Ambrosii Catharini ... responsio Lutheri' (1521). Die Vollmacht kirchlicher Ämter einschließlich des Papsttums wird in Zusammenhang mit der Konzilsfrage erörtert in: 'Sermo de virtute excommunicationis'(1518), 'Resolutio Lutheriana super propositione XIII de potestate Papae' (1519) und 'Disputatio de potestate concilii' (1536). Als Grundtext für das evangelische Verständnis von Amt und Gemeinde ist 'De instituendis ministris ecclesiae' (1523) aufgenommen. In die Frühzeit evangelischer Gottesdienstpraxis führt 'Formula missae et communionis pro ecclesia' (1523). Als Beispiel für Luthers engagiert-polemisches Eintreten für die Kirche beenden den Band seine Thesen 'Contra XXXII articulos Lovaniensium theologistarum' (1545).
